COUNCIL BLUFFS — RAGBRAI 2019 will begin in Council Bluffs.

During the route announcement event for the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa, officials listed Council Bluffs as the first overnight location for the ride.

The annual event will be held July 21-28.

The event last started in Council Bluffs in 2013; 2019 will mark the seventh time the event has been held in the city. RAGBRAI started in Glenwood in 2016.

The 2019 route will run from Council Bluffs to Atlantic, before heading to Winterset, Indianola, Centerville, Fairfield and Burlington before ending in Keokuk.

The route will run 58 miles from Council Bluffs to Atlantic. The full route is 427 miles this year, with 14,735 feet of climb, according to RAGBRAI officials.

“It will be a tremendous opportunity for the city to show off all the improvements that have occurred in the last six years,” said Mark Eckman, head of the Council Bluffs Convention and Visitor’s Bureau.

“This will be the time to Unleash CB,” Eckman said, echoing the city motto.
