Nebraska legislative candidate saved child before sled hit tree, killing him

A Nebraska legislative candidate from north-central Nebraska died Sunday after a sledding accident, but in doing so protected a child.

George Holm, 58, was pronounced dead at Avera St. Anthony’s Hospital in O’Neill, according to the Holt County Attorney’s Office.

Holm was taken to the hospital after he was found unresponsive 19 miles north of O’Neill on Sunday afternoon. An investigation showed that he struck a tree stump at high speed, according to a statement released by the County Attorney’s Office.

Holm was able to protect a child who was on the sled from being injured, officials said.

Holm, a Democrat, had announced his candidacy for the District 40 legislative seat but had not yet officially filed. The seat is occupied by Tyson Larson of O’Neill.
