LINCOLN — Nebraska is in the process of adding video boards and improving or replacing the existing ones at Memorial Stadium, putting about $6.2 million more into the game-day experience for fans.
Among those seeing the biggest difference in 2017 will be ticket-holders in North Stadium seats after north-facing screens are added to the towers in the northeast and northwest corners of the original structure.
“There will be good viewability for everybody in the stadium now,” said Shot Kleen, assistant athletic director with HuskerVision. “I don’t think anybody can’t see a video board now.”
The northeast and northwest towers already featured screens that faced across the field. In addition to images now being seen on both exposed sides of each tower, there will be the capability for one “wraparound” image that can stretch across from one screen to the other.
Some fans in North Stadium previously did not have great angles or proximity to video boards, including the giant screen that sat behind them and above suites that were added in 2006.
Nebraska also is improving the resolution of that North Stadium board, and all other video and ribbon boards. According to an NU release sent to season ticket-holders Tuesday, the resolution of the North Stadium board “will tighten from 20-millimeter to 10-millimeter pixels, creating a clearer, crisper picture that will match the state-of-the-art sound system that was updated in 2014.”
Kleen said it was a good time to take advantage of improvements in technology because the standard life of the original boards in the 2006 project was expected to be about 10 years.
Mitsubishi is handling the project, with the help of several local subcontractors. The work is expected to be finished by the end of July. Kleen said the video boards previously on the northeast and northwest towers will be taken over to Bowlin Stadium, home of NU softball.
According to Huskers.com, Nebraska also is in the process of widening some seats in the upper rows of North Stadium (ranging from 22 to 24 inches, from 18 inches previously) and upper rows of Section 14 in South Stadium (ranging from 20 to 22 inches, up from 18).
That will lead to a slight reduction in overall stadium capacity, although an NU spokesman on Tuesday said no such official figure is available at this time. Husker crowds last season averaged 90,200 for seven home games.
Nebraska will carry an NCAA-record 354-game sellout streak into next season, which starts Sept. 2 with Arkansas State visiting for a 7 p.m. kickoff that will be televised by BTN.
“As we continually look to improve the season ticket-holder, alumni and student Memorial Stadium experience, we are excited to bring on these new amenities for 2017,” Diane Mendenhall, Nebraska senior associate athletic director, told Huskers.com. “We will continue to strive to provide a first-class game-day experience and are always looking at possible ideas to continue to ensure the sellout streak.”
