Stephen King the horror writer urges voters to oust Steve King the Iowa lawmaker

Master of horror Stephen King is hoping Democrats win Iowa’s 4th District this week, and his motivation goes beyond mere politics.

The writer says he’s sick of being mixed up with Rep. Steve King, the Republican congressman who represents northwest Iowa.

“Iowans, for personal reasons I hope you’ll vote Steve King out,” the novelist wrote on Twitter. “I’m tired of being confused with this racist dumbbell.”

The writer King supports the Democratic Party and Democratic candidates and has been tweeting often about politics lately.

He has criticized President Donald Trump, but also opined on a congressional race in his home state of Maine and the high-profile Senate contest in Texas.

Rep. King has a long history of sparking firestorms with provocative comments on race and immigration.

But he set off a particularly intense conflagration this cycle after meeting with a far-right Austrian political party and giving an interview in which he talked about the replacement of Europeans with immigrants and stated that “Western civilization is on the decline.”

Those kinds of comments have drawn bipartisan criticism and resulted in some corporate donors abandoning their financial support for King’s campaign.

The congressman rejects the racist label and says the attacks against him have been “orchestrated by nasty, desperate and dishonest fake news.”

“Their ultimate goal is to flip the House and impeach Donald Trump,” he wrote on Twitter at one point. “Establishment Never Trumpers are complicit.”

When The World-Herald requested reaction Monday to the horror writer’s tweet, Jeff King, the congressman’s son and campaign manager replied:

“I see Stephen King is still writing fiction.”
