It might have been a balmy Thanksgiving, but don’t get too comfortable: Snow looks to be headed this way that could snarl travel plans.

The National Weather Service said “impactful” snow could begin Saturday night into Sunday. It said strong winds could exacerbate the snowfall, leading to poor visibility and drifts.

In other words, a recipe for a wintry end to a long Thanksgiving weekend that started off downright spring-like. With that winter weather could come all the associated travel headaches.

Temperatures on Thursday reached 60 degrees in some parts of the area (The average temperature since the late 1800s for the period of Nov. 22-30 is 41.8 degrees).

It won’t be quite as pleasant Friday, with a forecast calling for rain likely to move into the area in the morning, perhaps stopping around 1 p.m. It’ll be a cloudy day, with a high around 54.

But don’t get too grateful for the unseasonably warm weather. After reaching a high around 50 on Saturday, Mother Nature will be back to her old tricks: The weather service expects a snow storm to drop up to 6 inches in Nebraska City.

That’s not all. Winds will blow at speeds of 20 to 30 miles per hour, with gusts approaching 40, according to the weather service forecast.

“Strong winds may also result in blowing and drifting and could create significant travel impacts for the end of the holiday weekend,” weather service meteorologist Brett Albright said in a hazardous weather outlook. The Saturday night low is forecast to be around 28; on Sunday, temperatures at night could fall to 15.

Snowfall and winds should taper off by Sunday afternoon or evening, according to the weather service forecast.

Things could change by the weekend. People planning travel by road or air late Saturday or on Sunday should monitor the forecast for updates.

Still, the weather service said, this could be a big one, so plan ahead.
